The Drop

The Drop is an analog modeled resonant filter plug-in. It uses the same high quality algorithms used in circuit simulation packages but optimised for real time use. There is a huge level of detail in the models, which gives them amazing drive and tone. As well as the full circuit models more efficient algorithms are included for situations where CPU considerations are more important than tone, but even these models are of the highest quality.

The Ladder High and Low

Some 4 pole high pass and low pass action from a transistor ladder filter. The wobbles near the end are from the self oscillation of the high pass filter modulating the cutoff of the low pass, no LFOs were used, this is just the filters doing their thing. Drums are from the Vinyl Classics Live Pack and the dry and linear sawtooth waveform provided by Strobe, the same midi is sent to The Drop for triggering the envelopes and keytrack of the cutoffs.

Pump

With the pre and post gain as modulation destinations you can create pumping and panning effects with The Drop as well as filtering, in this case with the Sallen Key circuit model. The Drop is also used in high pass mode as an EQ on the kick and snare to add body with a little resonance and keep the sounds in mix tight be removing unwanted low frequencies. Drums are from the Goldbaby Urban Cookbook, the synth is Strobe with its filter switched off.

One Sided Tranny

A high and low pass transistor core Sallen Key MS1 circuit model is put through its paces on a sawtooth bassline which builds into a pad and then beat. The high pass filter in this example is a new circuit design to achieve 2 poles of high pass filtering as the original circuit the model is based on was only 1 pole, which isn't enough for most uses. Drums are from the Goldbaby Urban Cookbook and from MicroTonic, the pad sound is from Synplant, and the sawtooth bassline is from a Cytomic test oscillator.

Morphing LFO

This example puts the smoothly morphing LFO through its paces. The LFO can be synced to BPM, and automatically retriggered, so you can smoothly alter the rate but still stay in time with your music. The shape can morph between triangle, to saw up and saw down, and an exponential curve amount which can make the LFO sound like an envelope or square wave. There is also a swing parameter and stereo offset, and best of all is you can tweak them all the parameters in real time in very musical and expressive ways. This example was generated at 44.1kHz with no oversampling.

Driven Drums

This example uses the Sallen Key circuit model. The lowpass and highpass filters are swept around on a drum loop. The Drive control is increased gradually and once the filters are swept out of band the signal is completely clean again.

Circuit Modelling and DSP

Cytomic uses the same circuit modelling techniques that are used in professional circuit simulation packages but optimised for real time use. The structure including all feedback loops and useful non-linearities of the original circuit has been preserved. The algorithm uses actual values for resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors and other circuit components. The voltages and currents are solved in real time and match as closely as possible to the analog circuit in both the time and frequency domains.
